1.4 Activity 7 Find out about WLANS

Where are these projects mainly located?
Mainly located in Brighton,Bath,Cardiff, Edinbrugh, Alton, Bristol, Colder, Cork, Derbyshire, Essex, Wombourne in dorest, Galsgow, Yorkshire, Hastings, Cambridge, Repbulic of Ireland, Kent, Devon, Leeds, Lancaster and Manchester.
http://www.wlan.org.uk/operational_wlan_sites.html
Why have they been created? They have been created to try and bridge the gap of the digital divide.
What groups do they serve and in what way?
They serve the poor and the elderly, by trying to make wireless free internet avaliable amongst the city/town.
Have they, and/or will they have any impact on the digital divide?
They will have impct on the digital divide as it will allow people to use the internet whereever they are.

1.4 Activity 6 Investigate ICT at you libary

http://www3.hants.gov.uk/library/fareham-library-services.htm
This offers access to 41 computers and internet access

1.4 Activity 5 Research your local community ICT access

ICT in home town: There are computers in public libarys and schools so all childen are taught how to use computers at school.
Disadvantage groups: Elderly and people who can't afford a computer these people could benifit the most from more computer classes in the libary or in the community centre so they could have access to help them make there lives more convinent especially as many features are on line now-a-days , shopping, factual information etc.......
The elderly are currently served by having a free bus pass so they can travel which means they can get to places that have computers that are avaliable.

1.4 Activity 5 Research initiatives to fund the digital divide

BT INTERNET RANGERS:
http://news.zdnet.co.uk/internet/0,1000000097,39118132,00.htm

What is its purpose?
The purpose of this is to get more people online using ICT. BT are doing this as they want people to be online as they are then potential customers as they are more likely to use BT as their internet provider.
How it relates to the digital divide?
It encourages people who probably need and who are very unlikely to have the internet, to get the internet. Which is bridging the gap between the digital divide.
Who are it main target clients?
It is targetting elderly people and parents because elderly people as BT can be more certain that they will stay customers because they are less likely to search for better deals. By targeting kids are likely to put their parents under pressure to keep paying for the internet if the parents consider stopping.
What are it strengths and weaknesses?
"nearly 40 percent of adults are forced to rely on their children to help them cope with the online world" So it is a good idea using peoples children to help. Children may be reluctant to help. People may be reluctant to ask for help from their children.
What improvements could be made?
The improvements are that you can make is to train adults who will also be able to help with the project.

1.4 Activity 3 ICT and pensioners in rural England

Do you feel digital technologies have mad a genuine impact on the couples live?I feel that they have made a significant impact on there lives as they have started to use it to do everyday task such as shopping and it also allows them to have interest whcih can be enhaced by programmes on the computer.
Would their lives be poorer if they did not have access to ICT at home? There lives would be poorer if they did not have internet as it has enhanced there lives although if they had never had they interent it would not feel any different as they would no, no difference. We could also say that it is a distraction and they may not live such a healthy and pro active lifestyle, which may have bad effects on there health.
The couple were able to afford their own computer. Would access in the community centre three miles away be useful?
Having a computer in a community centre would not be useful due to the travelling required when they are using it for everyday tasks as shopping so that they do not have to leave the house. Although it would mean they have a chance to interact more with others and that they limit there time on the computer.

1.4 Activity 2 Who studies computing subjects?

What is the situation where you are studying?
Computing: 8 boys and 0 girls
Applied ICT: 8 boys and 6 girls

http://www.computerweekly.com/blogs/witsend/2009/08/ten-times-more-boys-took-computing-a-level---why-this-matters-for-the-it-industry.html

In England, ten times as many boys as girls took Computing A-level: 3,697 compared to 302. This trend continued across the UK. There were 4,256 boys on the course across the country, and 454 girls.

I think women who are taking ICT will be most likely to be effected as the workplace are used to having men, deal with computers and they may feel that woemn are not as good as men as they are in the minority.
This impact is setreotyping girls in to turning them away from doing subjects as it is look at as a 'boy' subject. Although the statistics for our school is a rare example where as there are only 2 more boys in ICT which is rare occurence according to the national figures.

1.4 Activity 1 What is the impact of internet access for the homeless?

Five ways in which access to the internet could change the life of a homeless person for the better:
  1. Access to help/support
  2. Improve their knowledge
  3. Find sources of cheaper food etc..
  4. Find a place to stay
  5. Find a job so they can support themselves.

Write down the impact that not having access to the interent has on that person:
It means the person has more of a sturggle to find out these pieces of information.

Five thing important to that person than internet:

  1. Food
  2. Water
  3. Shelter
  4. Warmth
  5. Job's

1.3 Activity 4 Discussion reducing the divide

What advantages are there for the developed world in bridging the global digital divide?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/530844.stm - dramatically improve the economic prospects for a lot of Americans - and, I might add, a lot of people around the world".

What are the advantages for the poorest nations?
Makes them dependent from the developed countires and allow them to grow and flourish on there own. It can help them fight poverty.

Was President clinton correct in saying that matching internet access levels with telephone levels will do as much as anything to reduce income equality?

Do charities such as Computer Aid do more good than harm?
I think that Computer Aid can do more harm because we are giving computers who are underprivileged and do not have enough to be sustainable and do not know any computer skills.

1.7 Activity 4 Compare search engines

How many results does each find?
Google: It finds 5,180,000, results for digital divide.
MSN: It finds 10,400,000 results for digtial divide.

All The Web: It finds 28,500,000 results for digital divide.
Ask Jeeves: It finds 1,880,000 results for digital divide.
In what manner does each offer choices for refinement?
Google: You can choose only pages from you country or you may find the type of result you are looking for blogs, news articles etc.... You may also ask the results to be shown from the last 24 hours or anytime depending on what you are looking for.
MSN: It offers pages just from your country or everywhere. It also gives you a list of related searches so that you can refine your search.
All The Web: You can refine your search by changing you language or searching all languages.
Ask Jeeves: You can refine your search from my changing you country or relating your search.
Is the result page easy to read?
Google: Yes the results page is easy and very clear to read as the results are shown with the site links then some information on the site underneath to give you an idea.

1.7 Activity 3 use google subject directory

I used google but to refine my search I clicked under computers so it only search for 'digital divide' in that topic.

1.7 Activity 2 Compare subject dictionary's and search engines

More or less simple to use a search dictionary:
I feel that by using a search dictionary it is simple as you can see the web pages that are definately related to the subject or topic that you are looking for.
Although by using a search engine you get more results, although you will have to go through and discard some of the website you feel that aren't relevant.
So overall search engines are simpler to use but can restrict your browsing and shoukd be used if you know what you are looking for presificly.

1.7 Activity 1 Usa a subject directory

The dictionary is a tool which you can use with your browser, by using it you may define your search and catorgise depending on what you are looking for:

1.3 Acitivty 3 Investigate the impact of access to telecoms

We can see from this table that the UK is ahead in telecommunications where as Niger and centeral repbulic of africa have not the large amount of telecommunications avalibale to them.

1.3 Actiivity 2 Data Response

http://www.unu.edu/unupress/unupbooks/uu37we/uu37we0s.htm
Dr Odedra cities a number of infrastructural reasons for the lack of effective ICT, what are these?

  • Lack of programmers that are avaliable in the country so off the self software packages have to be used.
  • Lack of secondary equipment, suitable electric power, or training.
  • Bad or ineffective public sector management because of the lack or inadequate use of data.
  • The applications of computers in Africa have so far been mainly the result of isolated initiatives without any preconceived strategies or plans.
  • The lack of long-term business plans in many organizations results in systems being purchased but not used properly. Managers need to understand that planning is essential before, not after, hardware and software is bought. At present, the most pressing need in Africa is not new systems, but rather the know-how to effectively use what is already there.
  • Africa lacks computer skills in all areas, including systems analysis, programming, maintenance and consulting, and at all operational levels from basic use to management. Most countries lack the education and training facilities needed to help people acquire the proper skills.

Most pressing need for africa (ICT):

  • The most pressing need in Africa is not new systems, but rather the know-how to effectively use what is already there.

How successful have computer aid projects been and how have they failed?

  • However, although the number of computers has increased rapidly in some places, the process of computerization has not been as successful as it should be in a majority of these countries. There is extensive under-utilization of equipment and major computer-based projects have failed (Odedra, 1990a). Examples abound of systems that are simply not used because of the lack of secondary equipment, suitable electric power, or training

What computor and business skills are identified as lacking?:

  • programmers to develop in-house applications
  • secondary equipment
  • education and training facilities needed to help people acquire the proper skills
  • the knowledge about local organizational cultures and thus design poor systems
  • long-term business plans in many organizations results in systems being purchased but not used properly
  • lack or inadequate use of data
  • skills in the area

1.3 Activity 1 What leads to being on the wrong side of the digital divide

Why are some people on the wrong side of the digital divide?

Guinea Bissau:
Is one of the smallest countries in Africa, it is in Western Africa, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean, between Guinea and Senegal . It is also one of the five poorest countries in the world, which is why it is likely to be on the wrong side. This nation depends on farming which does not generate alot of income, so they can't afford luxuries of computers.

Chad:
Central Africa, south of Libya, this a landlocked country. Chad is on the wrong side of the divide because of its distance from the sea which means that the insulation of telecommunications if difficult. In addition, just a quarter of the population are educated which means that only this small minority are likely to be able to use a computer if they were given the opportunity.

Mali:

It location is in Western Africa, southwest of Algeria. Mostly flat to rolling northern plains covered by sand; savanna in south, rugged hills in northeast. This means that telecommunicatios in this part of the world would to be hard to set up and maintain.

Burkina Faso:
Western Africa, north of Ghana. It is surrounded by six countries.
There have been a number of recent droughts and desertification which has severely affected agricultural activities, population distribution, and the economy. This has led to there not being excess in money to invest in new technologies, which has meant that they are on the wrong side of the divide.

1.2 Activity 18 Case Study Monitoring internet and email use

The advantages: The company can kep a strict control of what it's emplyee's are doing on the interenet, so that the employer can note if they have an employee who is wasting there time. It can also see emails that tey are sending so the company can see if the person is applying for different jobs. This will mean the comapny can see if it needs to talk to the staff accordingly.
The disadvantages: For the organisation is that it get numerous email to look through and some of them could be harmless meaning that they are creating extra work for themselves. They also are blocking certain sites that are unsuitable for workers but may be deemed suitable for others. The disadvantages of this for employees is that none of there email's could become personal, which means they have to monitor what they are sending as if it is to personal they will not want there comapny to be able to access to it.

1.2 Activity 17 Discussion Teen Arrive Alive GPS tracking system

Advantages: It helps parents feel and give teenages there trust if they have these GPS's to trust them. This helps the teenages also stay safe on the roads because they are being tracked meaning that the roads would be safer.
Disadvantages: It would mean that the teenager's feel they are not respected by there parents as it is an intrusion of privacy and they do not get any trust making them feel like adults. It could also make parents very anxious about when there children are out as they will be worrying and questioning themselves why are they there.
http://www.youthdrivingsafe.org/youth_driving.php
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for young people 15 to 20 years of age.
Young people age 15-20 make up only seven percent of the driving population, yet they are involved in 14 percent of all traffic fatalities.
A larger percentage of fatal crashes involving teenage drivers are single-vehicle crashes compared to those involving other drivers. In this type of fatal crash, the vehicle usually leaves the road and overturns or hits a roadside object such as a tree or a pole.

In general, a smaller percentage of teens wear their seat belts compared to other drivers. A larger proportion of teen fatal crashes involve speeding, or going too fast for road conditions, compared to other drivers.

More teen fatal crashes occur when there are teenage passengers in the car, than do crashes involving other drivers.
Two out of three teens who die as passengers are in vehicles driven by other teenagers.

1.2 Activity 16 Discussion US Passports and RFID

It will be faster and a more convinent way if you could scan people using the radio receivers as it would be faster for airport security and people we feel more comfortable although the dangers are more likely to occur. The dangers are that people could be misread and that people who are not supposed to pass security may get away if there are problems, because the radio may have an overload in the system if there are to many people. This may be a problem if the security are trying to check the person with the information if they are trying to look for them in a busy airport.

1.2 Activty 12 Discussion Impact of Game players

Why are computer games so popular?
Computer games are so popular because there is a variety of products and technology meaning that it is easier to get hold of them. Many families are likely to have at least one computer and a TV, and possibly a games console. On Tv there are many advertisments that are targeted at children through there programmes making them want to buy the game.

Do computer games make you more violent?
I think there are certain games make you more violent and the majority of games these days have violene in them, although the games that contain violence have a rating on them so you have to be a certain age limit.
http://www.toysadvice.co.uk/impact-computer-games-child-development.html

"There have been numerous studies into the effects of video games and children’s computer games, and the general consensus from all this research is that violent games have five different effects on children and children’s development.
Playing violent games has been shown to cause:
increased physiological arousal
increased aggressive thoughts
increased aggressive feelings
increased aggressive behaviour
decreased ‘pro-social helping’"

Do networked computer games make you more or less social?
If children spend a large amount of time playing computer games they are not socialising with others mean that they are more iscolated.
http://www.toysadvice.co.uk/impact-computer-games-child-development.html

"If a child spends excessive amounts of time (several hours a day, every day for example) staring at a computer screen you could find that his social skills are being neglected and it’s time to take things in hand"

Computer games make you more isolated?
Computer games can allow you to talk to other players although the communication skills are limited. We can show this because having a speaker may allow you to chat but face to face social skills are not used. When you are communicating over a speaker via a game they are also more likely to be discussing and talking about the game they are in rather than any other topic. It also means they are more likely to go out and meet up and socialise as there is another alternative where they are still able to talk but whilst playing a game.

1.2 Activty 15 Invesatigate the Pros and Cons of ID Cards

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3127696.stm
The Scheme:
ID cards are wanted to be brought in and would be linked to the national database and will be capable of strong alot of information on each person. These would be linked through keys such as the national insurance number, driver's licence, NHS number etc. The propasal ID register is intented to be the foundation of indentity management in the UK in the coming years. The card would have a biometric signature, i.e a digital version of a thumbprint, retinal print or some other unique characteristic. These cards would help prevent fraud although it would allow police and other officals to have potentially lots of information on you.
The ICT involved to set these cards up would be large as you need a database to store the information and it would be an expensive project because the technolgy of thumbprints and retinal print to be stored electronical for the whole country is going to also take its time. The purpose of the card is to be able to cut down on fraud as it would have everybody's details. I think that the card could meets it's purpose but it depend's how the system is goign to be put into place because it could have faults and get the wrong person and accuse innocent people of a crime that they did not commit.
The advantages are that if something happens to you your detail can be collected as if it is made compulsory for you to have people can find out who you are if you have an accident. It also can be used as ID in shops and you can use it so that information can be found out about you to prove that it isn't you. Although the drawbacks are that the information is going to be stored meaning that certain people will have acces to it at all times. The disadvantage are that as so much information is kept in the card if which would cause problems if the card is stolen indentity fraud could take place as you may not be able to retrive the card.
I think the ID cards should be in place but they should not be stored nationally rather in county's so that the whole country services can't access you information and it can be transferred and can be sent in email asking if certain pieces of information match then transferred. It should also be encripted infromation that only machines can read it so if it is stolen it is harder for fraud to be comitted.

1.2 Activity 14 Managing Information Overload

Spreadsheets:
http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spreadsheet
A spreadsheet is a computer application that simulates a paper worksheet. It displays multiple cells that together make up a grid consisting of rows and columns, each cell containing either alphanumeric text or numeric values. A spreadsheet cell may alternatively contain a formula that defines how the contents of that cell is to be calculated from the contents of any other cell (or combination of cells) each time any cell is updated. Spreadsheets are frequently used for financial information because of their ability to re-calculate the entire sheet automatically after a change to a single cell is made.
This can help with decsion making as the program has many different tools that you can use to view the information in a clear way. Example negative numbers are red and you can hide the calculation unless you want to see them so that you can just see the finish product. You can also add comments which will show up when you rollover them to help you remember more information if necesscary.

Data mining tools:
http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_mining
Data mining is the process of extracting patterns from data. As more data are gathered, with the amount of data doubling every three years, data mining is becoming an increasingly important tool to transform these data into information.
Data mining can be used to uncover patterns in data samples, it is important to be aware that the use of non-representative samples of data may produce results that are not indicative of the domain. Similarly, data mining will not find patterns that may be present in the domain, if those patterns are not present in the sample being "mined". There is a tendency for insufficiently knowledgeable "consumers" of the results to attribute "magical abilities" to data mining, treating the technique as a sort of all-seeing crystal ball. Like any other tool, it only functions in conjunction with the appropriate raw material: in this case, indicative and representative data that the user must first collect.

Simulation software:
http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simulation_software
Simulation software is based on the process of imitating a real phenomenon with a set of mathematical formulas. It is, essentially, a program that allows the user to observe an operation through simulation without actually performing that operation. Simulation software is used widely to design equipment so that the final product will be as close to design specs as possible without expensive in process modification.
This helps the person manage visual informatioin in a electronic format, which means they can modify it, without restarting it which is what would had to be done if it was being doen on paper.
The simulators can also have scenarios such as 'what if' this happens mean that you can test the design before making it and then realsing the fault, which saves money and time.

1.2 Activity 11 Disscusion pirated entertainment

  • What is the advantage of paying a supplier such as apple for legal music:
You know that you wont be causing a risk of getting a virus, illegal downloading can be slower than legal due to you are downloading straight from the apple website, you can also preview the music. The music is also of a better quality with apple.
  • Disadvantage of buying a pirate DVD from a market stall:
You can't be sure of the quality. You will not have any luck trying to return the product as you are not legally covered in anyway.
  • What is the disadvantage of getting a pirate download of the lastest Hollywood blockbuster before it's release in the UK release?:
The disadvantage is the sound quality, there will not be bonus features that you get on DVD's. You will also notice that the quality of the picture is not as good as if you bought it when it comes out in the UK, you will also have no grounds to stand if somethig with the DVD is wrong.
  • What is the disadvantage of you visiting an illict music download site?
The disadvantage is that you can be tracked and you could also download a virus that is attached to the song that could break your computer.
  • Does widespread illict downloading discourage the funding of new talent:
    http://www.whatsthedownload.com/

If music sales continue to drop because people are illegally swapping music on the Internet or copying their friends' CDs, then some of these people that work in the music industry might lose their jobs, and lose the ability to create cool new music for us! That could have a big impact on their ability to raise families, and on the economy as a whole. With less money to spend, they will buy fewer clothes and computers, take fewer vacations, etc. So illegally downloading a song or copying a friend's CD might just seem like free music to you and me - but it's costing someone else real money and having a real impact on the role music will be able (or unable) to play in our lives!
It will also discourage them to go in to the industry if they can't make a livelihood from there music.

1.2 Activity 10 discussion - access to original entertainment

It has never been easier to publish original entertainment although harder to see and hear orginal entertainment.
  • This is becasue there are numerous sites where anybody can publish original entertainment. eg. youtube , todaysbig fail, facebook videos etc...
  • This access means you can post numerous videos to different websites and because there is not a limit that can be uploaded it makes it easy for anybody to upload.

On the other hand:

  • It is difficult to access these videos due to the amount uploaded on the same subject - if you try and find a video you will get many different video choices realting to that subject turn up in some cases you can get more than 60 pages on one subject. Whcih means it is harder to find the original material that you want to view.
  • It can also be harder to distinguish original entertainment between secondary entertainment.

1.2 Activity 8 Bussiness Communications

http://www.sussexenterprise.co.uk/viewPage.jsp?id=5541643
'Face-to-face is still a valuable tool for imparting and building trust, negotiating, enthusing.
Video-conferencing allows some of the benefits of meeting in person without the travel - especially if the purpose of the meeting is transactional
Telephone - personal but loses the nuance of body expressions - a major part of communication. Voicemail and ’call waiting’ have generated enormous revenues although their effectiveness is debatable.
Mobile phone - if a conventional call is to a location, a call to a mobile is to a person. Some people think that the major use of this is as a tool for making calls...
Letter - still an excellent tool for contractual and complex communications, also for drawings.
E-mail - quicker and cheaper than a letter, the biggest danger here is that too few people re-read what has been written before hitting the ’send’ button. Also a point of danger for systems - you won’t get anthrax but some e-mails will be as terminal to your office systems if you aren’t careful.
Fax - the last ’big thing’ before e-mail usurped it; is still an excellent tool for getting pictures sent quickly.
Text -For the worst of all worlds, SMS ("Texting") to a mobile ’phone is high on impact but often low on clarity and personalisation.
Computer systems can talk directly to each other - settling invoices direct between company accounts for instance.
Websites - largely aimed at one-way communications, the Internet has transformed the way that we can get hold of information.
WAP phones - the internet on the move. '
Overall communications in bussiness is becoming more common as many bussiness rely on the technology, althought there are circumstances where older methods of transport should be used.

1.2 Activty 9 Finding reliable, valid information

How can we asses that infromation found on the internet is probably real? What signs should make us distrust a site?

We asses the information on the sites by evaluating certian features:
  • We look at the URL to see if it is coming from a site we trust etc .org, .com, .co.uk
  • We also look at the reference in the article to see if we trust there sources.
  • We also use our common knowledge to evaluate the websites and see if we see recongise any part of the story and read more, we usually check other sources to see if that infromation is reliable.
  • We can also look at the quality of the picture and can tell if it has been edited by photoshop.

1.2 Activty 7 Evaluate your communications

My personal communications include:
Email - I use email to communicate to friends and family, it is useful as I can attach work and it is a service that is reliable.
Texting - I use this to communicate quickly with my friends as it is a method I can use whereever I am.
Phones - I use this to have more in depth conversations than non verbal methods this is best used when it is not of a correct situation in which to use text. It is also not restricted to dependent on interent access and it is a portable method.

1.2 Activty 6 - When do you use mobile phones?

For what purposes do you use your mobile phone?
I use my mobile phone for social and personal reasons. To contact friends and family, I use it as a camera and the calender helps me to be organised as you can set dates for tasks or appointments.
How and where do you use your mobile phone?
I use my mobile phone as long as I have signal to contact people. I also use the camera when ever I need to take a picture. The calender and orgainser is used to whenever I need to update it.
What are the major benifits for you in using your mobile?
The major benifits of using my mobile is that I am able to sync and upload information back and forth. I can also use it when I am out, as it is many items in one.
What problems or disadvantages do you have in using your mobile phone?
The problems or disadvantages are that to go on the interenet to check emails is extremly costly and the optical zoom is not perfect.
Does your mobile phone fulfil its intented purposes?
My mobile fulfill's its intented purpose because it canccomplete all the actions I currently require it to do and that it replaces many different items so that I now only carry my phone.

1.2 Activity 5 When do you use e-mail?

http://www.learnthenet.com/english/email/000mail.htm
For what purpose's do you use email?
I use email to send message's to my friends and family, I also use it to send work back anf forth to different computers as you can attach - documents , pictures , music and video clips.
How and where do you use email?
I use email by logging onto my email either orange or google email. I can do this as long as I am at a computer with internet access.
What are the major benifits for you in using email?
The benifits are that e-mail is fast, that you can attach digital files, forward information and I can send the email to multiple recipients.
What problems or disadvantages do you have in using email?
Email delivery is not guaranteed, because sometimes spam filtering software may block a message or direct it to the recipients Junk Mail folder. I also find that using my orange account limits how big the attachments are allowed to be but my google account doesn't mind.
When does email make you more productive and less productive?
Email makes me more productive when I need to contact somebody quickly about work. It makes me less productive as it can be a distraction from work and it also can make you less productive when you have to think of how to word an email in the correct manner.
Does email fulfill its intended purposes?
Email fulfills it purpose of allowing people to contact one another and being able to sending bits of information to one another.

1.2 Activity 4 Discussion Digital communication versus voice conversation

Communicating in SMS in text language, can have social downside compared to having a proper voice conversation - this is that is you are texting, it might have two meanings and could be taken the wrong way. It also not giving as much information and you can not show any feeling about the topic. Although the advantage is that it is quicker than a conversation, if you or them are busy at the time.
The social downsides to firing off a quick e-mail rather than having a short conversation - is that an email like an SMS is that you can't show any feelings and it may be interpreted wrong. Although there is an advantage to sending email is that it is quicker as you don't have to go and meet the person, you can also be more polite in and email than SMS, and you can add somebody else in to the email if needed whereas you can't if you are having a conversation and that person is not avaliable causing you to repeat and explain the situation.

1.2 Activity 2 Ambulance services

Some workers objected to being sited in their “resources” in the most efficient place rather than being sited in the ambulance station because many workers can be sat in their 'resources' for a long time whilst wating for the a call out. If they are waiting in their 'resources' it means they have no toilet or cooking facilities.
What other drawbacks have there been with the introduction of these ICT systems? The drawback of the systems that are predicting where ambulances need to be are not always correct because it is only predicting and because we are humans we do have accidents at different times and places everyday, causing some of the ambulances to be futher away from the site than they would of been if they had been at a base, at the time.
What have been the benefits of these systems? The benifit's are that the response times have been on average quicker than before this technology, this causes survival rates to rise as the medical team are on site quicker.

1.1 Activity 13 Investigate online banking

The purpose of online banking is to preform banking activites at home, via the internet. It allows customers to access there account anytime and can be done from anywhere with internet access. Online bankine can update information in real-time or infromation updated on a daily basis.
Target audience: It is the people that have bank accounts and aimed at people that don't have the time to go into the bank to make payments. It is also target at the age of people who have computers and can complete online banking.
http://www.halifax.co.uk/home/home.asp and https://ibank.barclays.co.uk/olb/o/LoginMember.do :
Both of these websites allows you to be able to: make and account with the bank and then you can complete numerous banking transactions, which fulfills the purpose of online banking.
Online banking could be improved in the future by as sometimes you have to put in a check request as early as 2 weeks before it is due, causing them to lose interest on that moeny for two weeks. Some services such as travelers checks and cashiers checks are not offered by online banking.

1.2 Activity-3 Analysing the 'Good old days'

Different office based applications that could be used to improve the paper based system are - excel and word.
EXCEL:
The adavantages over the paper based system are that you can, type in your figures and it can do the formula for you. It will also allow you to interprit the data quicker as you will be able to guarenteee it is right.
WORD:
The adavantages over the paper based system are that you can type your work up and it will be checked automatically. You can also make different tables dependent on you data.

WORD VS EXCEL:
Word could be seen as better than excel because you can write reports under the data.
On the otherhand excel can present graphs from the data, which word can't and word will not check the calculations are right.
The employment of the secretaries and typists will be lower this is because many magers can do these themself, faster without involivng anybody else. It is also more normal to have secretaries who are personal assitances rather than typists. This is because the job does not take as much time to do now and people can be trained to use a computer in a number of days rather than years.
NEW JOBS:
Opportunities that have been opened up from this technolgy is jobs such as call centres, about there banking, insurance , computer helpdesk.

1.2 Activity-1 tool man

Activity -tool man

John could use the follwoing communications to replace his older method's and improve his working style : PDA, GPS, Laptop, software, mobile phones and the internet.

By using this technology he can have an electronic diary which he can sync with his computer allwoing him to have one orgainiser. GPS will allow him see where he is which will be accurate and will mean he doesn't have to carry lots of maps around. A laptop will allow him to show his clients presentation and be able to work on the move. He could use the software to be able to catalogue sales and the prices allowing him to add the prices up. The interent will allow him to communicate with clients when he is not in the office by receving emails. Mobile phones will also allow him to call clients without having change on him and be able to call them even if there is not a telephone box. His mobile phone and laptop will also alllow him to listen his music.

Although the downside to the technology is that it's is going to be heavier than all of the recent stuff he was carrying before, even though it will be more useful. It is also goign to be difficult because all of the items are goign to be requiring charging and if you don't charge them you are not goign to be able to use the item and will not have an alternate option. The phone will also be able a problem if you can't get signal in certain area's. If you combine these all into an 'I-phone' which could replace alll of these pieces of technology - meaning it would be less to carry - you could also sync this with your PC. This would be the best piece of technology to use although you only have a small screen and it wont be good to work on it for too long.

1.1 Activity 21 Online entertainment

Last three months:
Itunes radio
Its purpose is to allow people to listen to the radio from there computer. It is targeted at middle age people and younger audience who want to listen to the radio, that have the technology. It is being enhanced as you aren't limited by your location, much choice is avaliable. The limitations could be that there is too much choice and that you reception could be broken after looking after it for a while. Overall it fulfill's its purpose extremly well, allowing people to listen to the radio and have a vast amount of choice on offer.
BBC iplayer
Its purpose is to allow people who have missed there program, can still watch it. Itunes is aimed at people with busy lifes, I would say people who are in there mid teens - middle aged that have the technology. It is being enhanced because if it didnt have the internet it wouldn't be here. You internet connection has to be fast, you also have to let your interent buffer otherwise the connection can be broken. Overall if fullfill's it's purpose the best because people can watch a programme from the last 7 days so that they can still lead there normal lifestlye.
Games
Its purpose is to allow people who want to use entertainment to amuse themselves and games to let people play over the internet. I would say this is aimed at the younger market who have spare time and want to be amused by these games. It is being enhanced by being online as you have play with people over the world. The limitations are virtually non exisitent, as long as you have high speed internet. It fulfills its purpose well allowing people to have online entertainment

1.1-Activity 20 - Investigate downloading goods and services

I have downloaded music from itunes and a program called gimp.
I-tunes - I did this as the music can be put on my ipod and it is cheaper than buying the CD. It was also more convinient rather than going to the shops and getting the CD.
GIMP- a program which is used for editing photos and making images rather than using photoshop due to it's cost and it's smalled file size on my computer.
Downloaded both pieces has worked fine as on I-tunes my music can be downloaded to my i-pod and it stays in my libary. GIMP has also worked fine as it can be used and has been used to create images, it also work well with editing photo's.
The downsides of these two products is that if you don't back up you music libary and you computer has a problem and loses it's memory you lose your songs, but if you had a CD you would be able to re-upload. This would also mean you can downlaoded the CD to multiple computers rather than jsut paying it to be put on one.
GIMP's downsides are that some of the tools aren't as good as the real photo and image editor.
Otherwises the products I have downloaded are been used more because the interent is allowing products to be downloaded via the internet.

1.5-Activity 8 which do you prefer?

The best thing I liked about ebooks is that you can access them via the interent, that there is a range of different books and different formats of viewing that particular book. The navigation when using hyperlinks to skip to different parts in the book.
the drawbacks are that some books you have to pay for, that they are difficult to read as they are not in a good format.
I think the essential benfits is to make sure the book is user friendly by making navigation easy, being targeted at the right audience with pictures for children etc... We should also make sure the book is in a format that we know the audience will like because if you want people who want to view it exaclty like they would on paper to lay it out by pages and not just a long page.

1.1 Activity 18 Research online education

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/bitesize//
I would learn best by this website by finding my level and revising the subject that I need to work on, take the test. Then if my score is not good I would revise again. I would then let myself play a game to reward my self once I understand the subject.
http://www.funbrain.com/
This is a website for younger children learning about different topics in there educational cirriculum. Many children will find this activtiy interesting as it is learning through fun, which many parents would be happy about letting there children play on the website.
http://www.mathplayground.com/index.html
This is a website for primary school children by making learnign fun and interactive by using games to distract them from learning and make it a more positive experience. I think children would want to go on this site and paretns would be happy as they are indepently learning.
http://www.brainpop.com/
This websits is very interactive and displayed out for children in a fun way. I would learn by using this website to find out the information I need on the topic and reading it. Maybe also by using the multimedia that is on the site.
http://www.bayhouselearning.co.uk/
I have come across SCORM a format which comapnies sell there product in then they can be put on VLE's, which are used for educational purpose's like Bayhouse's. This is a useful way of allowing learning as the information is on there for the student and teachers can edit it where appropiate

Rank
1. BRAINPOP
2. BBC
3. Bayhouse learning
4. MATH PLAYGROUND
5. FUN BRAIN

1.1 Activty 17 Use a learning object

http://www.lynda.com/home/DisplayCourse.aspx?lpk2=113
This website is very helpful and tells you and teaches you how to use a blog. This would be extremly useful if you did not no how to accomplish something but you need to learn how to get it done. I think was extremly useful by shwoing the webpage with a voice over rather than just talking because this makes it a lot clear when you can see the screen.

1.1 Activty 16 Macromedia virtual classroom

http://www.adobe.com/resources/elearning/presentations/
This technology is an example of e-learning as you can learning via interactive learning. It helps people learn via different methods of teaching which other will find more useful than others. It can offer different ways of teaching than before and it can also offer us informatin and teaching materials that we can access in our own homes. Successfully completing online or computer-based courses builds self-knowledge and self-confidence and encourages students to take responsibility for their learning. The disadvantage of e-learning is that you may unmotivated learners or those with poor study habits may fall behind.Lack of familiar structure and routine may take getting used to and students may feel isolated or miss social interaction. Slow or unreliable Internet connections can be frustrating and managing learning software can involve a learning curve.

1.1 - Activty 19 Investigate goverment services online

Online Services

Saving Money:
If you complete these services on line the goverment save money because the government when we do the forms by hand they have to send them to us which means postal charges. With postal charges it means the post office has to have staff in which is costing money, as they need holiday and they have sick days. So the more people are need in the process as delivery will increase.
When we submit our form these will have to be entered in to a database by humans, whereas if we submit the forms online we are doing half the work as it is already on the system. Which cut's down on the administrative cost.

I rank the four services which are :
Information services, Online booking, online payments. online reporting and advice.
1. Information services as you can find out lots of information and this services is dominating the site most.
2. Online payment because there are lots of different things you can pay and by using this site you can trust it is goig on straight to the government.
3. Online reporting and advice is a service that is not as widely used or as important as some of the others.
4. Online booking is a service that is not used to book lots as there aren't many services you can book from the site.

1.1 Activty 15 Use a simulation

http://frog.edschool.virginia.edu/Frog2/Dissection/Incisions/muscle1_first.html
This website helps students when preparing to do a practical frog disection as it goes step by step with what to do. It is showing that online stimulation is being designed for indivdual topics, it also shows that online education is expanding as many students are fortunate enough to have access at home, meaning students can do indivdual research. Using a computer is also a more intersting way to get a child to do educational activites as it seems more interesting.

1.5 Activity 7 Comparing e-books for children

HTML format - a site where the collection of oscar wilde's stories, poems and plays can be viewed, the structure is in paragraphs and the stories are viewed on one page. There is a colour background.
PDF - you read the story page by page, there are no special features it is just blank, the purpose is to view different stories. Nothing is done to attract children.
Rosetta Project - it uses interactive multimedia you can view it with sound and you view it age by page. The books are illustrated, the purpose old books online and to view some you have to download by paying.
Treasure Island - structure in paragraphs, you view the story on page. The purpose is to view novels.
We Read - a list of viares child stories, that are view like the orginal story book, fully illustrated and user interface is very child friendly.

I think the order of best books are:
We read (BEST)
Rosetta Project
Treasure Island
HTML
PDF

I think this order as they appeal most to children with there layout and the way the books are viewed with illustaration as We read has the best illustration but the PDF is just a document with the story on.

1.1 - Activty 14 Explore learning object and simulations

http://www.makingthemodernworld.org.uk/
This site is a non profit organistation and is in partnership with the national science museum, sponsored by the ISB fund of the Treasury and the Cabinet Office.
The site's purpose is to get educational content on the computer, it is amied at A-level and vocational students. This website is interactive website and uses different types of multimedia. The navigation on the website is has tabs which are very simple but it also has animated actions where you can rollover pictures to show information, the website is a very interactive. It is also easy to use as the tabs give you clear guidance about where you are.
This website showw us that technology is being used for educational purpose out side the classroom, this website has many articles that are text based for information. The downside to too much text is that even though it is at you fingertips that it may not interest the reader. This website also shows that students are dependent on the internet and books are becoming less used than before. I feel the website fulfill's all the crieteria and is an easy navigatable website for students.

1.1 Activty 12 Ebay

http://www.ebay.ie/
http://computer.howstuffworks.com/ebay5.htm
The pupose of ebay is a bidding site, which sellers can put items on the inernet and where others can bit for them, as if they were in an acution. This is a viable way of people selling goods they don't want or no longer need. In some cases people make a living from e-bay if they find a product the market is willing to buy.
The target auidence is dependent on the products on offer for example if the sellers find a market and that there tarket audience is willing to to use the computer to buy it and that they get good feedback from customers. Also the target market is growing as many older people are now becoming compute literate, due the the digital divide getting smaller.
The auction process works by the buyer finding an item he is willing to buy, before buying you can look on what they are willing to do about shipping, payment and return policy. You can also check the sellers feedback before you are willing to bid. If you then decide to make a bid you enter your starting bid and a maxium bid you are willing to go up to. This is because ebay will raise your bid if you are out bidded. You the click continue and go onto a conformation screen then nobody else can see what our maximum bid is. When you're the first bidder, no matter what you enter as your maximum price, your first bid is always the starting price. If someone bids against us, eBay will bid on our behalf up to our maxiumn, the increments can vary depending on price (low-price auctions use very small increments, while high price auctions use larger increments). So if another user comes along and enters above our starting bid as his maximum, eBay will bid more money on our behalf, and we'll still be winning. Although if we are out bid even eBay will send us an e-mail to this effect in case we're not watching the auction. At this point, if we still want the item, we have to enter a new maximum bid. So we enter a new maximum bid and as long as the other bidder's maximum amount is less than it, we will be winning the auction again. Although, if the other bidder wants this item as much as we do, he's going to bid again until he outbids our maximum. Then we will have a bidding war.
If this war continues for the three days until the auction ends, we could end up paying alot for the item. Most of the bidding happens in the last two minutes of an auction. People wait to place a bid until an auction is about to close this way, they can catch other bidders off guard, and hopefully no one will get the chance to outbid them.
If an auction item also has a "Buy it Now" option, if someone decides to "Buy it Now" the auction is over. But the opposite is also true: As soon as someone bids on the item, the "Buy it Now" option disappears. If someone comes across an item she wants but she's not willing to pay the "Buy it Now" price, she'll enter the minimum starting bid just so another user doesn't come along and buy it out from under her.
How well it fulfils it's purpose it set out to be a larger personal site of a french computer programmer. its purpose now is to for people to make money by having people buy and sell stuff over the internet. It has exapanded greater than he ever thought it could it is now a world recongised name. It fulfils the purpose of along people to sell and buy stuff onan auction site extremly well.
Benifit's and limitations, the benifits is that you can sell you unwanted items and make money and that you can watch an item and bid at the last few minutes. Limitations include that you have to change your maxium again if you are out bid and that if your are a seller you can only sell so many items per year, unless getting ebay to increase the number of items you are allowed to sell.
Successful shopping model, it is one because it has many transactions , you are allowed to post items to see the item you are willing to buy, you can search for the item you want and that you have a choice on how much you sell or buy the item for.

1.1 Activity 9 use usenet groups

http://groups.google.com/group/ictdigitaldivide/browse_thread/thread/1fad6556ef26c992
I have found a disscusion on the digital divide it is not been updated in 6 months but I feel, I can still carry on with the activty. I found that on the dicussion a limitation was that you had to be a google member which means you are likly to get less people to comment on the dicussion. One of the beinift's is that you get many different opinions. I feel that it did mean its purpose of a dicussion but because of the limitation it wasn't rally a discusion more like somebody answering somebody else's question.

1.5-Activty 4 Accesibilty

http://www.techdis.ac.uk/

Most important recommendations:
  • Enlarge text rather than increase the size otherwise as the text style could be lost when you do that.
  • Using an onscreen keyboard , or having the page being read by a narrator on the computer for people who can't see as well.
  • Using different contrast to make it easier for people to see certain parts of the page
  • Magnification software: enlarges the image on screen (up to 32 times). For people with impaired vision and learning difficulties.
  • Screen reading software: for visually impaired people who rely entirely on speech or braille output to use a computer.
  • Text-to-speech software: enables text to be read back using synthesised speech output.
  • Voice recognition systems: reads back dictated text in synthetic speech. Can be used in conjunction with a scanner and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software: for people with dyslexia.
  • Text highlighting, spell checkers, word prediction, thesauri and text to speech software: for people with dyslexia.
  • Keyboards with big keys and/or coloured keys; 'Gloves' (which fit over a standard keyboard and make it easier to strike the required key); keyboard stickers: for visually impaired people, age-related conditions and motor impairment.
mouse alternatives e.g. trackballs, touch-pads and joysticks. For anyone who has difficulty using a standard mouse.
  • JAWS (Job Access With Speech) for Windows: for blind and visually impaired people. Used with web browsers, email programs, databases and standard Microsoft applications, plus more sophisticated development tools and advanced software.
  • Kurzweil 3000: a computer-based scanning system for people who are blind, or who have a reading disability or learning difficulties e.g. dyslexia, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).

1.5-Activty 6 Compare online encyclopedias

Britannica Online
Purpose: The purpose of this site is that people can go onto the webiste and search for information about different subjects, this is a factual site.
Format: The format of this page is a HTML document
Structure: It is structured with tables to keep everything formatted and it makes the page easier to use as it has a very clear and define structure.
Presentation: It is different shades of blue, with a search bar at the top of the page -this is a very clear feature as it is outlined in yellow. There is a list of all of the different sections of the encyclopedia down oneside, which the relevant information will appear next to. On the other side of the web page there is a list and explanation of different things britannica does for differnt age ranges.
Navigation: The navigation is very good on the page as there is many link to different pieces on information on the page such as 'shop' there is also the links to the different sections and the search box for easy navigation.
Encarta
Purpose:The purpose of this site is that people can go onto the webiste and search for information about different subjects, this is a factual site.
Format: It is a HTML document
Structure:It is structured with tables to keep everything formatted and it makes the page easier to use as it has a very clear and define structure.
Presentation: It has a blue and white background, this site has some adverts on it and is a bit more busier. It has a search box and along the top it has the different parts of the encylopedia. I felt as it was so busy and the text was too small.
Navigation: There are many links on this page to adverts and the links to differnt parts of the encylopedia, the links are easy to use.
Encarta Multimedia Encyclopaedia
Purpose: The purpose of this site is that people
Format: It is an HTML document.
Structure: It is structured with tables to keep everything formatted and it makes the page easier to use as it has a very clear and define structure. Although this page has very defined boxes making it more appealing to the viewer.
Presentation:It has a light blus background with a picture adding somme colour to the screen then underneath there are three boxes a blue one where you can sign up for updates, a green box about school tip and a yello box for teachers. There is also a search box at the top of the page.
Navigation: The navigation is that there is a search box and manly link, the only thing I think could be inproved is that there is no sub topics.

I feel that all sites could have improvement some of the navigation on the last site needs improvement but I think the best site would be Britannica online as it is more helpful and easier to use, whereas I felt Encarta the structure was not very good and I felt the page was too busy.

1.5-Activty 5 Comparing versions of Hamlet

http://www.bookrags.com/ebooks/1524/1.html
Purpose: The purpose of this e-book is to be able to read the Hamlet on a screen rather than a hard copy of a book. This is beinifical, so that you can read the book on screen and dont have to buy the book.
Format: The open e-book format simplifies the structure using XML. This format is most useful for books without multimedia content. It is a very flexible format and most useful for books without multimedia content. As with any website structure it us a very flexible format as it can be viewed over the web or downloaded.
Structure: The structure of the book is structured by pages like a hard copy book would be
Presentation: The presentation is not very good as it is text wrapped at the top as they have an advert. The website does not display the text layout extremely well.
Navigation: There is buttons at the bottom of the page to take you to the next page or you can use the links to take you to different ACTS.
http://www.ebooks3.com/ebooks/hamlet.html
Format:HTML. This is a very usefull format as it requires no download and can be easily opened in the browser.
Structure: The book is layed out look a normal book with each page being on a different web page.
Layout: The site has simple pages with a plain cream background and the book cover in the side bar. The site title is at the top of the page.
Navigation: The book has a contents page with links to take you to to the next page.

Evaluate the best one: I think the best book is the version from ebooks cube, this is due the the easy navigation of the book on screen and they way that it was structured. The other book had some good qualities that this one didnt that it had buttons to take you to the next page. I feel for the version on book rags to improve it they need to make the text eaiser to read and not have it wrapped around an advert.

1.1-Activty 10 Plan a journey

Marks Tey Rd, Fareham - Tottenham court Rd London
Car
Cost: 90. 2 miles petrol prices approx about £17 (could depend on driving conditions)
T
ime: 2hr 1 min + congestion charge
Dates: 19th Septemebr 2009
Sources&how useful they were:
http://www.theaa.com/route-planner/index.jsp , this source was useful as you could type in your post code and then were you wanted to go although I did have to find out the post code of tottenham road, as I tried the road and it did not reconise it although once you have the right information the site calucalte's everything for you. It gives you step by step instructions and tells you everything you need to know.

Rail
Departs from Southampton airport parkway and arrives to waterloo where you can then get the tube to Tottenahm court road.
Cost: £30.70 and tube cost £4.00
Time: 1hrs 11min and 14 mins (tube)
Dates: 19th Sepetember 2009
Sources&how useful they were:http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/
and tube site is http://www.tfl.gov.uk/ . I found the national rail site was very easy to use, it helped you that once you started typing a drop down menu appeared giving you option of the different stations, although it didnt give you the price when you planned ajourney you had to go find that out seperatly. The tube site was also very easy to use as you could see the times that it would take you to go from one station to another and it was easy to find the price as it can do tht when you tell it your journey plans.

Decision: With the sites and information I have come across, I could make an informaed decision on what method of transport I could use to go from London to Tottenham court road. Car is a longer travel, you also have to be aware of were you are going and constantly following directions from the website, the travelling time is also much longer. The logistics of getting a car into central London will also add time and money as you need to think that you will also need to accountre for congestion charge and parking costs, as parking is goign to be a heavy charge as parking in London is very limited.
Although the rail is very costly but alot quicker way to get into London and a lot less hassle once you have got into London.
Overall I would travel to London by rail due to the easy website and less hassle once you have reached your destination as I saw the tube is a very expansive network across London.

Overall the websites were giving you an idea but I felt that the websites are both more accurate closer they are to the date you are on. Both websites were about the same, although the BBC gives you the temperature, wehreas the metoffice gives you more detail about the day and goes futher in the future. So overall I would say they are as accurate as each other but the Metoffice is beter that going in depth and overall giving more information about the futre forecast.

1.1-Activty 4 How email works and exchange in email.

Email and how it Works:

Email works as long as you have email software on your computer or a web-based email. All that you need is an e-mail server for the client to connect to. This diagram below is the simplest possible email software. Machines that are on the internet can run software applications that act as servers. There are many different servers running on millions of machines right now.
There are many different text files one for each person. When you click the send button the domain name is stripped of then that email server is contacted, then your email is added to the end of the appropriate text file. When someone goes and check there email, the email program copies the file and the server file is cleared.
The message is usually composed in an editing window or frame within the mail client, it can either be text based but can now also be HTML based. Messages are usually sent using an SMTP server (simple mail transfer server) and received using a POP3 (post office protocol-port) or an IMAP (internet email access protocol port) server.
To receive mail the person will connect to there server and if a person wishes to send mail it will all be passed to …….. , which will pass it on to the appropriate server.

Using SMS on your phone:
The purpose of this is to communicate with a person many of us use short hand writing in this type of communication as then you have more space on an SMS page. This is a functional way of commincate as you don't have to a stationary all you need is to have your phone, the only problem with this means of communication is that it's a costly communication service and that you can't right long messages. The otherdraw back is that if you have no signal you can't send a message or recvieve one.
Using a chat service:
The purpose of this is to have a instant conversation with somebody. This is a fuctionally way of communicating although you need to have the chat service dowloaded and internet avaliable. You are also restriced if someone is not online you can't talk
Using email:
The purpose is that you can send message through the internet and if you can also send a long message to people, although a restriction on the size of the files you send if attachments are added.

1.1-activty 5 disscusion

In our group we disscussed on MSN messanger and we were disscussing the purposes of email.
we came to the decsion email's purpose is to contact people electronically and faster than traditional methods such as writing a letter. We also discovered the purpose of email is to exchange files and pictures with each other without ever making a hard copy of them.
E-mail meet's it purpose very well as it has proven succesful as many of us use it everyday to communicate with friends and family.
The benift's of using email is that you can communicate with somebody even if they are not online like a instant messaging service, that files can be sent via the email to exchange work.
Although the drawbacks of using email are that it is not instant and we have to wait for replies, we also have a limit on the size of files and pictures we send.
