1.4 Activity 5 Research your local community ICT access

ICT in home town: There are computers in public libarys and schools so all childen are taught how to use computers at school.
Disadvantage groups: Elderly and people who can't afford a computer these people could benifit the most from more computer classes in the libary or in the community centre so they could have access to help them make there lives more convinent especially as many features are on line now-a-days , shopping, factual information etc.......
The elderly are currently served by having a free bus pass so they can travel which means they can get to places that have computers that are avaliable.

1.4 Activity 5 Research initiatives to fund the digital divide

BT INTERNET RANGERS:
http://news.zdnet.co.uk/internet/0,1000000097,39118132,00.htm

What is its purpose?
The purpose of this is to get more people online using ICT. BT are doing this as they want people to be online as they are then potential customers as they are more likely to use BT as their internet provider.
How it relates to the digital divide?
It encourages people who probably need and who are very unlikely to have the internet, to get the internet. Which is bridging the gap between the digital divide.
Who are it main target clients?
It is targetting elderly people and parents because elderly people as BT can be more certain that they will stay customers because they are less likely to search for better deals. By targeting kids are likely to put their parents under pressure to keep paying for the internet if the parents consider stopping.
What are it strengths and weaknesses?
"nearly 40 percent of adults are forced to rely on their children to help them cope with the online world" So it is a good idea using peoples children to help. Children may be reluctant to help. People may be reluctant to ask for help from their children.
What improvements could be made?
The improvements are that you can make is to train adults who will also be able to help with the project.

1.4 Activity 3 ICT and pensioners in rural England

Do you feel digital technologies have mad a genuine impact on the couples live?I feel that they have made a significant impact on there lives as they have started to use it to do everyday task such as shopping and it also allows them to have interest whcih can be enhaced by programmes on the computer.
Would their lives be poorer if they did not have access to ICT at home? There lives would be poorer if they did not have internet as it has enhanced there lives although if they had never had they interent it would not feel any different as they would no, no difference. We could also say that it is a distraction and they may not live such a healthy and pro active lifestyle, which may have bad effects on there health.
The couple were able to afford their own computer. Would access in the community centre three miles away be useful?
Having a computer in a community centre would not be useful due to the travelling required when they are using it for everyday tasks as shopping so that they do not have to leave the house. Although it would mean they have a chance to interact more with others and that they limit there time on the computer.

1.4 Activity 2 Who studies computing subjects?

What is the situation where you are studying?
Computing: 8 boys and 0 girls
Applied ICT: 8 boys and 6 girls

http://www.computerweekly.com/blogs/witsend/2009/08/ten-times-more-boys-took-computing-a-level---why-this-matters-for-the-it-industry.html

In England, ten times as many boys as girls took Computing A-level: 3,697 compared to 302. This trend continued across the UK. There were 4,256 boys on the course across the country, and 454 girls.

I think women who are taking ICT will be most likely to be effected as the workplace are used to having men, deal with computers and they may feel that woemn are not as good as men as they are in the minority.
This impact is setreotyping girls in to turning them away from doing subjects as it is look at as a 'boy' subject. Although the statistics for our school is a rare example where as there are only 2 more boys in ICT which is rare occurence according to the national figures.

1.4 Activity 1 What is the impact of internet access for the homeless?

Five ways in which access to the internet could change the life of a homeless person for the better:
  1. Access to help/support
  2. Improve their knowledge
  3. Find sources of cheaper food etc..
  4. Find a place to stay
  5. Find a job so they can support themselves.

Write down the impact that not having access to the interent has on that person:
It means the person has more of a sturggle to find out these pieces of information.

Five thing important to that person than internet:

  1. Food
  2. Water
  3. Shelter
  4. Warmth
  5. Job's

1.3 Activity 4 Discussion reducing the divide

What advantages are there for the developed world in bridging the global digital divide?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/530844.stm - dramatically improve the economic prospects for a lot of Americans - and, I might add, a lot of people around the world".

What are the advantages for the poorest nations?
Makes them dependent from the developed countires and allow them to grow and flourish on there own. It can help them fight poverty.

Was President clinton correct in saying that matching internet access levels with telephone levels will do as much as anything to reduce income equality?

Do charities such as Computer Aid do more good than harm?
I think that Computer Aid can do more harm because we are giving computers who are underprivileged and do not have enough to be sustainable and do not know any computer skills.
